SKYCITY Hamilton Northern Spirit Begin Their Domestic Campaign

Published on 22 Nov 2017

The campaign for the Northern Districts women's cricket team starts this weekend as they travel to Christchurch for the three match challenge against the Canterbury Magicians.  The side will consist of some fresh faces as the newly recruited Samoan Captain Regina Lill'I and teammate Feala Vaeula will make their debut for the SKYCITY Hamilton Northern Spirit.  Natalie Dodd will apply her international experience when she takes on the captaincy role for 2017/18.   The batting and bowling stocks with be strengthened this campaign with the return of former WHITEFERN Felicity Leydon-Davis who is back in the squad having missed last season with a back injury.  Mereana (Meddy) Hyde will face her former Canterbury teammates when she lines up for the Spirit this weekend.

Northern Districts Director of High Performance Peter Zanzottera is confident of a strong and competitive start from the women, saying that the new recruits and thorough preparation led by new Head Coach Garry Wood puts the team in good stead.  "We have a solid mix of youth and experience in this side, and our lead up has been good, with the camps lead by Garry and our SKYCITY Hamilton NPL league providing excellent game preparation coming into the domestic season.  We have seen exciting performances by Katie Gurrey and Nensi Patel in our NPL competition and Sam Curtis performed well for the WHITEFERNS against Pakistan.  Canterbury always put forward a strong side but we feel we have the depth to be competitive."
