The “Tim Southee End” will be the official name of the Seddon Park Pavilion end for the duration of the upcoming BLACKCAPS Test match against England, as a fitting acknowledgement for a player who has truly changed the Test landscape of cricket in Aotearoa.
Southee will bring his legendary Test cricket career to a close following the third and final Tegel Test against England, which starts in Hamilton on Saturday. He will finish as New Zealand's second highest Test wicket-taker, requiring 11 more to reach 400. He also sits five maximums away from being the fourth cricketer to hit 100 Test sixes.
“Tim is a legend of the game” says Northern Districts Cricket CEO Ben MacCormack. “Naming a bowling end in his honour for this Test not only celebrates his outstanding international career but also his connection with Northern Districts (ND). He is a proud ND Man who has made himself available for his region whenever possible, and he is considered a treasure in his home district of Te Tai Tokerau-Northland.”
“We are grateful to Tim for his commitment and passion for the game, and at this junction in his career I also wish to thank his family. The support network sitting alongside the players in our sport are what allow exceptional talent to flourish.”
In collaboration with New Zealand Cricket and Hamilton City Council, Northern Districts Cricket is delighted to shine a light on Southee’s magnificent achievements through the years with the Tim Southee End.
NZC GM Marketing & Communications Stacey Geraghty said it was a fitting gesture from Northern Districts to acknowledge a New Zealand great.
“Tim has achieved and contributed so much to New Zealand Cricket and for his region Northern Districts.
This final Test is going to be a celebration of his illustrious career, and what better way to recognise one of the games great bowlers by temporarily naming an end after him.”
The third and final Test in the BLACKCAPS v England Tour of Aotearoa will be played at Seddon Park in Kirikiriroa-Hamilton starting this Saturday, with the BLACKCAPS looking to change the tour’s narrative to date after two losses in Christchurch and Wellington.
